Vehicle Information:

This coach came new into the David MacBrayne fleet in May 1960. Like many other buses and coaches, it was allocated to the isle of Islay for some time. During its stay there, it operated almost all service routes including steamer services from Port Askaig and Port Ellen.

When MacBrayne ceased operating the bus side of their company in 1970, YYS had a new owner: Western S.M.T. of Kilmarnock, with whom it was based at Ardrishaig Depot. Some local services suited the size of this coach, Ardrishaig - Oban and Lochgilphead – Inveraray were its regular routes. Eventually it found its way to Kilmarnock, and after a short spell filming with STV, YYS was put in storage at Cumnock Depot.

During this time, Western was taken over by Stagecoach. The company moved YYS to the Ardrossan Depot, and prepared it to operate Brodick Pier – Brodick Castle service on Arran, but this was short lived as the coach was not suitable. Soon Stagecoach put YYS up for sale and was purchased for preservation.

Changing hands in February 2003, a considerable amount of mechanical and body work was carried out at Bridgeton Bus Garage, including a repaint and a new set of vinyls applied.

Photographs below are of YYS 174 at Ardrishaig in 1971 and at the Kelvin Hall on the day the Museum of Transport closed prior to the move to Riverside.
